Academy Staff

John Means

NCAA championships are no stranger for this highly successful coach. In 1990, Means took over a beleaguered University of Minnesota program that was a perennial cellar dweller in the Big Ten and had not been to the NCAA championships since 1972. After only three years, the team went to the NCAA championship and proceeded to do so for eight straight years. The team he recruited and worked with until his departure from the Gopher program won the NCAA Division I Championship in 2002.

During his 11-year tenure at Minnesota, Means had a .726 winning percentage and the Gophers were ranked among the top 20 teams nationally in his final eight seasons. He coached nine All-Americans, four Academic All-Americans, 14 All-Conference players and 27 Academic All-Conference selections. He coached two-time All-American James McLean who was the 1998 NCAA medalist and who currently plays on the pro tour. He also helped Minnesota host the 2000 NCAA Golf Championship at the Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Currently John is the Head Women’s coach at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he enters his fourth season as the head women's golf coach for the Blugolds.

During his time with the Blugolds, Means has guided the team to three NCAA Championship appearances. The spring 2008 appearance by the Blugolds was the eighth consecutive appearance for the team, the second most appearances by an NCAA Division III institution in history. In the spring of 2006, Means’ first season, he led the team to a fifth place finish at Nationals. That fall, Eau Claire finished as WIAC Champions for the third year in a row. Last fall the Blugolds finished fourth in the WIAC.

At Eau Claire, Means has coached four All-Conference members, three All-Americans and three individual conference champions.

Minnesota was not the first place where Means tasted success. During an 11-year stint at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, he won 11 conference championships and led the Cadets to eight straight appearances in the NCAA championships. There he produced three All-Americans, 27 All-Conference players and four Academic All-Americans.

Among his many honors was being runner-up for NCAA Coach of the Year in 1998. He was a four-time NCAA District Coach of the Year. He is past president of the Golf Coaches Association of America and also the Big Ten Coaches Association. He has received the National Golf Foundation's Distinguished Teacher Award and was the team manager for the 1994 USA-Japan Collegiate All-Star team.

Spencer Hutton

Spencer is an assistant Golf Coach at North Central University in downtown Minneapolis. He also played Division I golf for Universities in Minnesota and Texas. Spencer is a former member of the Academy of champions who had a successful high school career in Minnesota. He was a 6 year varsity member at St. Cloud Tech High School where he lettered 4 years, was all state one year, won the Class AA (now AAA) individual championship and competed for team Minnesota in the Minnesota-Manitoba cup.

In addition, Spencer has also been an instructor at the John Means Golf camps, as well as camps run by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Spencer specializes in preparing letters for college golf coaches, creating videos and formatting resumes which can help to secure a scholarship and/or a position on a Collegiate Golf Program. Spencer will spend at least 2 hours with each student individually and help them in the selection of Colleges. Finding the right college for each individual is a vital step to success both on the golf course and off. Spencer will go through an interview process with each student, and then he will research colleges and come up with a list of 20-40 colleges that match the student’s criteria. After this process he will help student’s format cover letters and resumes which will than be sent off with swing videos and recommendations to the college coaches at each school.
